Iraq

As all of you know, I am quite liberal. That being said, I think this is an incredible photo.

Note: The ink on her finger is what they used to make sure that people didn't vote more than once. It's definitely low-tech, but I guess it works.

Long lost photos

Hello again.

Well, I came across some really old photos that I wanted to share with everyone. Two summers ago some friends from Oberlin got me interested in triathlons. I met these guys while they were at Furman doing research with the River Basin Research Initiative which, among other things, was designed to teach young students how to stand in water waste-high and shock the hell out of fish in the name of science. But, I digress.

In the middle of the summer, we got two teams together and went north for our first triathlon. Some of the pictures that I have are posted below!

The tri was on a saturday morning. So, we got a hotel the night before. Here we are leaving from the hotel and heading to the race course. On the left is Patrick. To his right is Robin. To her right is Mike's bike and finally (barely visible) is Mike. This picture was taken ~ 5am.

Since I had the only SUV of anyone on either team, I was nominated to drive the equipment. From this day foreward, my car has been known as team van. I was responsible for transporting both the bikes. Mine is the lime green one and Mike's is the powder blue one.

Here is the transition area where all the bikes are stored. Some of these bikes are really expensive.

Not sure why I have a single of Mike. But, there it is. Check out that getup!

Well, when all was said and done, we kicked some ass. This is us just before receiving our awards. You can see the back of Mike on the very right. Diana is just to his left.

All in all, it was a great day.

Also, I couldn't resist posting this one from the archives:

Talk to everyone soon!

Honestly, if you are a grad student in any field you must read this. It is absolutely hysterical.

Enjoy!

Not that anyone but Abi would really care about this, but anonymous comments are now enabled. You can comment on this crap without having to log in. I assume there will be tons of Spam commenting -- anything to keep Abi happy!

Fads

I think we all know "that guy" who hates everything popular. For example,
1. AIM: "What a stupid invention. I don't use AIM. I only use ICQ." Yes, of course, we all used ICQ back in the day. Instant messaging is a tool for communication. You can be as obstinate as you want and pretend to be cooler by using ICQ, but because no one uses it anymore, there's no communication going on.
2. Web: I know someone who actually wants to go back to gopher. Should I say more?
3. Blogs: Yes, they are everywhere, but so is the apple? I eat apples. Do you?

Let me be perfectly clear: Society may be diminishing as a result of these inventions. There may be less face to face communication, and more demand for instant access and gratification. However, to be categorically against anything that is "in style" seems sorta backwards. As many of you know, I am completely (almost categorically!) against change. But, I do like to go with the flow and evaluate each fad individually to determine if find it useful.

So what if I bought an iPod because I saw it in an episode of ER. I ended up finding it incredibly useful. I can't help it if everyone else finds it useful and buys one too!

I must be a square for getting on all the bandwagons. Sooner or later I am going to get too tired for the bandwagons, but for now, I enjoy riding the wave of pop culture.

New Years Resolution

Well, well, well. I made a promise to a coworker that I would blog more in 2k5. She made me call it a resolution. So, only 13 days into the year, I am making good on the promise.

Tonight we had a great CS party. The reason for the party, as if one were needed, was simple: celebrate the fact that quals are over. For some of my friends, this week was hell as they took the exam that will pass them into PhD student status. To be fair, quals are not the end all of the transition, but they are important. I am sure that everyone did well because everyone here is incredibly smart.

Throughout the night, alcohol was consumed. As usual, some great things were said. Tuba kept a running count of what was said and what was "bloggable." Choice quotes should appear soon in the UVACS bulletin board. This board can be found at http://uvacs.proboards34.com. Check it out, its quite funny.

Abi, I hope that this entry gives you hope that 2k5 may finally be the year of Will's Blog. At the very least, I hope this shows that I am trying!
